Thursday Feb 11, 2016 (foodconsumer.org) -- A study published in Neurology found that people diagnosed with diabetes mellitus were at much higher risk for dementia than the general population.

The Rotterdam study conducted by researchers at Erasmus University Medical School in Rotterdam, the Netherlands showed that diabetes mellitus almost doubled the risk for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

It is interesting to note that people with diabetes mellitus who received insulin treatment were 330% more likely to suffer dementia. This means that either severity of the disease or the insulin treatment may increase the risk for dementia.

Other studies have indicated that high glucose in the blood in diabetes mellitus patients was associated with higher risk of dementia and people with both diabetes mellitus and heart disease/vascular disease had to face even higher risk for dementia.

The association between diabetes mellitus and dementia was often found among older people.

Antioxidants may help prevent both diabetes mellitus and dementia by inhibiting some enzymes engaged in the pathology of these diseases, according to some research. (David Liu)
