Thursday Aug 21, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new case-control study suggests that a person's diet has a lot to do with his risk for stomach cancer. The study of 53 patients with stomach cancer and 53 without the disease in Oman shows that intake of bread, beef, cheese, soft drinksa nd sweet desserts was associated with significnatly increased risk of stomach cancer while consumption of fruits, vegetales, fruit juice, yogurt, tea and vegetable salad significantly reduced the incidence of stomach cancer.

Early studies suggest that a high salt diet and eating dinner too late are risk factors for stomach cancer. In those with a cancer-causing bacterium called Helicobacter pylori, which is found in about 50% Asians, high salt can promot the pathogenic bacterium to produce a cancer-causing agent that damages the stomach. Eating dinner too late makes it hard for the gastrointestinal system to repair the damage, inreasing the risk of mutageneissi and carcinogenesis. (David Liu, PHD)
