- Description: A meta-analysis of 14 randomized trials found high dietary fiber intake lowered circulating C-reactive protein by 0.37 mg/L in overweight and obese adults. A sub-analysis found the reduction only among those taking 8 grams of fiber a day or more.

Saturday Jan 17, 2015 (foodconsumer.org) -- Previous studies have suggested that high intake of dietary fiber may lower circulating C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation, in overweight/obese adults, but not all studies are consistent.

A review of relevant studies confirms that high dietary fiber intake of intake of food naturally high in fiber can lower circulating CRP levels in overweight/obese adults suggesting that dietary fiber is protective against inflammation.

The randomized controlled trials (RCTs) reviewed were published before April 2014\. A meta-analysis of data from 14 trials shows a significant reduction (0.37 mg/L) in circulating CRP levels among overweight/obese adults. A further sub-analysis shows that such a reduction was only found among those who had intake of 8 grams of dietary fiber per day or higher.

Supplemental individual dietary fibers available include glucomannan, beta-glucan, psyllium, and inulin, which are commonly used in weight loss pills. (David Liu)
