The U.S. Justice Department and other government agencies on Feb 19 issued a joint statement that the investigation into the 2001 anthrax attacks has officially concluded.

The department said further investigation confirmed its earlier conclusion that Dr. Bruce Ivins, a U.S. Army scientist who committed suicide in 2008, was solely responsible for the mailing of the anthrax laced letters.

The anthrax attacks killed five people and sickened 17 others.

A 92-page investigative summary and about 2,700 pages of FBI documents detailing the investigation into the case were released and made available to the public on the website at [http://foia.fbi.gov/foiaindex/amerithrax.htm](http://foia.fbi.gov/foiaindex/amerithrax.htm?ref=foodconsumer.org)

The DOJ says in its statement that during the the massive investigation, 25 to 30 full time investigators from various agencies including FBI, US postal inspection service, and other law enforcement agencies expended hundreds of thousands of work hours on the case.

The agents talked to 10,000 witnesses on six different continents, conducted 80 searches and recovered more than 6,000 items of potential evidence, issued 5,750 grand jury subpoenas and collected 5,730 environmental samples from 60 site locations.
