Monday June 20, 2016 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new study conducted in South Korea suggests that some prostate cancer patients may not have to use those dangerous and costly hormone and or radiation treatments and what they need to do is simply drink a special type of soy milk, which the study finds may inhibit the progression of prostate cancer. For the study, scientists tested a soy milk digestion extract on the progression of prostate cancer in human LNCaP prostate cancer cells. The soy milk digestion extract tested in the study contained daizein at 1.988 mg/100g, glycitein at 23.537 mg/100 g and genistein at 0.685 mg/100g. Daizein, glycitein and genistein are known biologically active components. Previous studies have proved that at least genistein, a phytoestrogen, may be used as a supplement to reduce risk of prostate cancer. The current study shows that the presence of estrogen 17β?estradioli increased the prostate cancer cell viability while both genistein and the extract decreased the cell viability. Also, the soy milk digestion extract lowered PSA (Prostate Surface Antigen), which is often used to indicate the severity of prostate cancer even though some scientists have questioned its reliability. The scientists of the study further determined how the soy milk digestion extract inhibited the proliferation of prostate cancer. (David Liu)*Kang NH, Shin HC, Oh S, Lee KH, Lee YB, Choi KC.
