- Description: US obesity rose over a decade even as physical activity increased, researchers reported in Population Health Metrics. Over nine years of survey data, each 1 percent rise in activity matched only a one-tenth of a percent drop in obesity; the authors conclude exercise alone is not enough.

Exercise can provide many health benefits, but weight loss is not necessarily one of them, according to a recent study published in *Population Health Metrics*. Researchers found that obesity levels have risen over the past decade despite an increase in physical activity in the U.S. population. Nine years of data from two large-scale health surveys indicated little correlation between obesity and physical activity. For every 1 percent increase in physical activity, obesity rates declined by only one-tenth of a percent. The researchers concluded that exercise alone is not enough to address this growing health crisis.
