[Fox News ](http://www.foxnews.com/science/2015/11/19/gmo-salmon-could-be-headed-to-supermarket-near.html?ref=foodconsumer.org)reported today that the U.S. Food and drug Administration had approved the petition filed by AquaBounty Technologies to sell its genetically modified (GM) salmon fish in the U.S. food market. The federal agency was cited as saying that the GM salmon fish is safe to eat. This salmon fish is genetically modified in a way that the fish can produce and maintain high concentrations of some growth hormone during all four seasons, which boosts the growth of the fish. Natural salmon fish need three years to grow big enough to be harvested. The GM salmon fish can shorten the growth period by half. The GM salmon fish intended for the U.S. market may be only raised in Canada and Panama, according to news reports. The FDA does not require the fish producer to label its GM salmon fish. For more information, read [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AquAdvantage\_salmon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AquAdvantage%5Fsalmon?ref=foodconsumer.org)[/genetically\_modified\_salmon\_1223120206/](https://www.foodconsumer.org/genetically%5Fmodified%5Fsalmon%5F1223120206/)
