Sept 26, 2016 (foodconsumer.org) -- Fenugreek supplements may be used to help treat type 2 diabetes mellitus, according to a study published in the *International Journal of Basic & Clinical Pharmacology.*The study shows that among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, those treated with both metformin and fenugreek had better outcomes than those treated with metformin alone. In the study, 30 patients with diabetes mellitus took 500 mg of metformin along with one gram of fenugreek seed powder thrice a day and 30 other patients took metformin only in the same dose for 12 weeks. After the treatments, both fasting and postgrandial blood sugar and HbA1c levels were reduced in both groups, compared to baseline data. However, the improvement was greater in the group of patients treated with both metformin and fenugreek seed powder. The study suggests that fenugreek seed powder improves glycemic profile in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The supplement may be used as an add-on therapy with metformin in treating diabetes mellitus.Fenugreek is commonly used as a seasoning ingredient and also as a traditional medicine in Indian subcontinent. A review of 10 trials published in 2014 in Nutrition Journal indicates that fenugreek seeds can help reduce fasting blood glucose and HbA1c in patients with diabetes mellitus.[*Nithya NeelakantanEmail author, Madanagopal Narayanan, Russell J de Souza and Rob M van Dam, Effect of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecumL.) intake on glycemia: a meta-analysis of clinical trials, Nutrition Journal 201413:7 DOI: 10.1186/1475-2891-13-7*](http://nutritionj.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1475-2891-13-7?ref=foodconsumer.org)**Similar reports on fenugreek and diabetes mellitus:**
