- Description: Among 25,096 men in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, 36 percent reported erectile dysfunction over 10 years. Higher intakes of flavones, flavanones and anthocyanins were linked to 9 to 11 percent lower risk, and high fruit intake to 14 percent lower risk in men under 70.

Eric Rimm at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts and colleagues conducted a study and found that eating flavonoid-rich foods may help reduce risk of erectile dysfunction in men at 70 or younger.

The study found that after adjustment for other risk factors like factors for cardiovascular disease, flavones, flavanones and anthocyanins were associated with 9%, 11% and 9% reduced risk for erectile dysfunction, respectively, when extreme intakes were considered.

Specifically, high intake of fruit - the major source for anthocyanins and flavanones was associated with a 14% reduced risk for erectile dysfunction in men younger than 70 years.

The study based on data from a survey of 25,096 men enrolled in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study showed that during a 10-year follow-up, 36% of the participants reported incident erectile dysfunction.

The study concluded that "a higher habitual intake of specific flavonoid-rich foods is associated with reduced ED incidence."

It is believed that erectile dysfunction is a vascular condition which is in turn related to a man's diet. Previous studies revealed that high intake of several flavonoids was associated with reduced risk for diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. (David Liu)
