- Description: Rats fed high-fat or high-sugar diets gained weight and showed higher urea, creatinine, blood sugar, cholesterol and malondialdehyde with lower nitric oxide. Adding garcinia cambogia supplements improved body mass index, kidney function, triacylglycerol and oxidative markers.

Sunday June 29, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- A study in Lipids in Health and Diseases suggests that taking garcinia cambogia dietary supplements can help protect against renal damage induced by a high fat or high sugar diet.

The study shows that rats fed on high fat diet or high sugar diet, but also receiving garcinia cambogia supplements improved body weight, renal function and oxidative status that were worsened by either diet.

For the study, rats were fed a standard control diet for 12 weeks or a diet containing 65% high sucrose diet or 35% fat diet (high fat diet) for eight weeks and then high fat diet groups were divided into two groups with one group supplemented with garcinia cambogia and another without. Likewise, the high sugar group was also divided into two groups with one group supplemented with garcinia cambogia and the other without.

Both high fat diet and high fat diet caused a significant increase in feed intake, body weight and weight in mesenteric, Perirenal and epididymal adipose tissues. Biochemically, both diets increased serum levels of urea, creatinine, blood sugar, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, triacylglycerol, total cholesterol, and malondialdehyde, but decreased levels of nitric oxide (NO).

Garcinia cambogia supplementation improved the unfavorable changes and increased levels of nitric oxide. That is, rats fed diets supplemented with [garcinia cambogia](http://pillsco.miiduu.com/garcinia-cambogia-1300-weight-loss-pills-60-ca-maritzmayer-laboratories?ref=foodconsumer.org) had better body mass index, kidney function, triacylglycerol and oxidative biomarkers, compared with rats that were not supplemented with garcinia cambogia.

Garcinia cambogia extract is a very popular weight loss dietary supplement now. It can be purchased on the Internet or local healthy stores. (David Liu, PHD)
