A study recently published in International Journal of Cancer suggests that use of supplements glucosamine and chondroitin may help reduce risk of colorectal cancer (colon cancer and rectal cancer).

The study reveals use of either glucosamine or chondroitin was associated with about 23% reduced risk of colorectal cancer. A similar association was found for the combinational use of glucosamine and chondroitin.

The study based on data from two prospective cohorts, the Nurses' Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-up Study also shows similar associations for rectal cancer and colon cancer.

It is not clear how glucosamine and chondroitin can help prevent colorectal cancer. More studies are needed to confirm the potential protective effect against the disease. (David Liu)
