*Food & Water Watch praises bi-partisan legislation aimed at promoting consumer choice.*

Statement of Jim Walsh, New Jersey Director, Food & Water Watch

**Trenton, NJ --** “Today, New Jersey legislators voted in favor of legislation that will require labels on genetically engineered food. We are encouraged that our State Assembly has prioritized this cause, giving consumers a choice about whether or not they want to buy foods that contain genetically engineered materials. People are demanding information so they can make an informed decision about what foods they will feed their families.

“Independent, peer-reviewed research on biotech crops has revealed troubling health implications including deterioration of liver and kidney function, impaired embryonic development, adverse neurodevelopmental effects and endocrine disruption. At the very least consumers should be able to decide if genetically engineered foods should be fed to their families.

“The impact of genetically engineered foods goes beyond consumer health as we have recently seen with unapproved genetically engineered wheat contaminating non-GE wheat fields that are many miles away. This threatens the livelihood of farmers and takes away their choice to plant what they want.

“This legislation will help take the power of choice about what we eat away from corporate CEOs and lobbyists, and give consumers the knowledge about what processes their food has undergone to make informed decisions about what they want to eat.”

Food & Water Watch works to ensure the food, water and fish we consume is safe, accessible and sustainable. So we can all enjoy and trust in what we eat and drink, we help people take charge of where their food comes from, keep clean, affordable, public tap water flowing freely to our homes, protect the environmental quality of oceans, force government to do its job protecting citizens, and educate about the importance of keeping shared resources under public control.
