- Description: Exposed to metastatic MDA-MB231 breast cancer cells, high concentrations of grape seed extract inhibited proliferation while low concentrations reduced cell migration and invasion. The authors call the extract, rich in procyanidin, a candidate for developing agents against breast cancer metastasis.

Wednesday June 12, 2013 (foodconsumer.org) --- A new study in European Journal of Nutrition suggests that taking grape seed extract as a dietary supplement may help prevent breast cancer from becoming advanced breast cancer or lower the risk of death from the disease.

The study led by S Dinicola from La Sapienza University in Rome, Italy and colleagues shows that high concentrations of grape seed extract inhibited cell proliferation and apoptosis, and low concentrations decreased cell migration and invasion in in vitro breast cancer cells.

The authors said in their report that consumption of fruit and vegetables which are high in procyanidin, has been associated with reduced risk of death from breast cancer. They reasoned that grape see extract, which is found high in procyanidin, should also help reduce the risk of death from breast cancer, which is largely due to cancer cell migration and invasion. The study was intended to demonstrate that grape seed extract is effective in preventing metastatic breast cancer.

For the study, the researchers exposed the highly metastatic MDA-MB231 breast cancer cell line to both high concentrations and low concentration of grape seed extract and then measured breast cancer cell migration and invasion.

They concluded that grape seed extract is a powerful candidate for developing preventive agents against breast cancer metastasis. (reporting by Jimmy Downs)
