Tuesday June 3, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new study in Nutrition and Metabolism of Cardiovascular Disease suggests that drinking green tea or taking green tea extract as a dietary supplement may help treat high blood pressure or hypertension and improve lipid profile.

The review shows drinking green tea can lower systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol by 1.94 mmHg, 0.13 mmol/L, and 0.19 mmol/L respectively.

A total of 20 human randomized clinical trials of 1536 participants identified in Medline, Embase, Amed, Cinahl and the Cochrane Library were included in the review.

Drinking green tea did not cause any adverse event such as rash, elevated blood pressure, and abdominal discomfort.

The study concluded "Green tea intake results in significant reductions in systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol. The effect size on systolic blood pressure is small, but the effects on total and LDL cholesterol appear moderate."

Ti's not convenient for most people to brew and drink green tea. Fortunately, green tea extract is readily available over the Internet, which is easier to use.

Green tea has been known to help prevent cancer and obesity among other things. (David Liu, PHD)
