## Help Sonoma County Ban GMO Crops!

Five California counties along California’s northern coast have passed bans on growing GMO crops. The only remaining unprotected county in the Northwest Coast GMO Free Growing Zone is Sonoma.

Fortunately, Citizens for Healthy Farms and Families succeeded in getting a citizens’ initiative on the ballot in November that would ban GMO crops in Sonoma County, too. The next step is to pass the ballot initiative.

**Can you make a donation today to help Sonoma County pass a ban on growing GMOs?** [**You can donate online, by mail or by phone, details here.**](http://salsa3.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=6ol6joFTlyv63QHBKTFdLl1woo2IQypw&ref=foodconsumer.org)

Sonoma County has a long tradition of local and organic farming. Almost 80 percent of the dairies in Sonoma are organic, and several of those dairies sell to buyers far outside the local region. The county is also home to 18 farmers’ markets where consumers shop for local and organic produce.

Monsanto’s genetically engineered crops are a real threat to these family farmers and dairy operators. Once genetically modified seeds are introduced in the area, there’s no way for farmers to protect their crops from cross-contamination. Once trace amounts of genetically modified pollen contaminate organic pastures or crops, farmers are at risk of losing their organic certification and/or their reputation with local customers.
