Saturday Nov. 02, 2013 (foodconsumer.org) -- A small trial published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine suggests that a herbal supplement with so called Target Herbal Ingredient (THI) can help weight loss.

Soo Hyun Cho and colleagues from Department of Family Medicine, College of Medicine, Chung-Ang University Hospital in Seoul, Republic of Korea and colleagues conducted the study and found patients who used the supplement for 2 month lost an average of 2.5 pounds of body weight. The weight loss was statistically significant, the authors reported.

For the trial, 53 patients were randomly assigned to receive the supplement or placebo for a period of two months to examine how the supplement could affect weight loss in the participants.

The herbal supplement is made of Scutellariae Radix and Platycodi Radix which contain the active ingredients Baicalin and Saponin (THI). In addition to its effect on weight loss, early research shows that THI can improve metabolic syndrome.
