- Description: Male Wistar rats fed a 10% fructose diet for eight weeks developed insulin resistance, glucose intolerance and dyslipidemia, along with changes in cardiac vagal tone, heart rate and diastolic function. The authors compare the rats’ age to early childhood in humans.

Tuesday April 21, 2015 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new study in European Journal of Nutrition suggests that young children should not eat too much fructose, a simple sugar found in sucrose and high fructose corn syrup because early developmental exposure to high fructose was found damaging to the heart in animals.High intake of fructose may be a risk factor for metabolic syndrome, obesity, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia. Metabolic syndrome increases the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease, according to the study report. The study showed that rats eating high fructose experienced symptoms of metabolic syndrome including insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, and dyslipidemia. Fasting glucose and hypotensive responsive were found in rats eating high fructose.Intake of fructose was also found to negatively affect the cardiac vagal tonus, heart rate, and diastolic function among other things. The study concluded "Data suggest that early exposure to high fructose intake produced marked alterations in metabolic and cardiovascular function."In the study, male Wistar rats aged 21 days (equivalent to 2 years old for humans) were fed diet with 10% fructose for eight weeks (equivalent to 3.8 years for humans). [One rat day is comparable to 34.8 human days](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3733029/?ref=foodconsumer.org). Metabolic and cardiovascular functions were measured for the study group and compared with those for the controls. The study seems to suggest that children aged 2 to 5.8 years eating a diet with high fructose (10% fructose or more) could suffer damaged cardiac function.**Reference**European Journal of Nutrition January 2015 Date: 07 Jan 2015[Early developmental exposure to high fructose intake in rats with NaCl stimulation causes cardiac damage](http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00394-014-0826-5?ref=foodconsumer.org#page-1)I.
