- Description: A meta-analysis of 36 Chinese studies in Cancer Causes Control found women with at least one induced abortion were 44% more likely to develop breast cancer, rising to 76% and 89% after two or three. The studies were observational, so the association is not necessarily causal.

Friday Nov 25, 2016 (foodconsumer.org) -- It is always risky for an organism not to follow its natural path. A meta-analysis of previous Chinese studies released in Cancer Causes Control indicates that induced abortion can increase risk of breast cancer, which was diagnosed in [1.4 million Chinese women in 2012](http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2095882X15000043?ref=foodconsumer.org) (25% all cancers).

The [study ](http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10552-013-0325-7?ref=foodconsumer.org)based on 36 studies including two cohort studies and 34 case-control studies of women residing in 14 provinces in China shows that women who underwent at least one induced abortion were 44% more likely to develop breast cancer than those who did not have any abortion.

The risk for developing breast cancer was increased by 76% or 89% in women who had at least two or three induced abortions, respectively, compared to that for those who had no history of induced abortion.

The associations between induced abortion and risk for breast cancer are consistent in all studies.

The study concludes that induced abortion is significantly associated with an elevated risk for breast cancer among Chinese women and the risk increases as the number of abortion increases.

Although these studies are not trials, meaning that the association is not necessarily a causal relationship, it has been clear that abortion makes a female's breast tissue more vulnerable to mutagenesis and carcinogenesis or increases risk for breast cancer.
