- Description: Mice carrying implanted human prostate cancer that ate a diet containing inositol hexaphosphate, a component of high-fiber diets, grew smaller tumors than controls, a study in Cancer found. IP6 appeared to block formation of the blood vessels tumors need.

Wednesday Jan 9 2013 (foodconsumer.org) -- Eating a high fiber diet or taking inosital supplements may help patients with prostate cancer stop the disease from progressing into a late-stage disease, according to a new study published in the January 2013 issue of the journal Cancer.

Both Asians and Americans have a similar incidence of prostate cancer, but Americans are more likely to have their early stage prostate cancer develop into a late-stage disease, compared with their Asian counterparts.

The study suggests that the variation in the severity of the disease may be due to the dietary difference between Asians and Americans. Specifically, Asians eat a more fibrous diet full of vegetables while Americans eat a western diet full of dairy foods and meat and much less vegetables.

For the study, mice with human prostate cancer implanted were fed a diet with inositol hexaphosphate or IP6, a major ingredient in high fiber diets, or a diet without this component as controls and monitored for the progression of prostate cancer in both groups of mice.

Mice fed with the diet full of the fiber component had smaller tumor volumes, compared with those controls that did not eat the fiber component.

IP6 was found to inhibit the formation of new blood vessels which are needed for cancer cells to grow new cancer cells. Without these blood vessels, energy supply was shut down and prostate cancers couldn't grow.

Prostate cancer is like breast cancer. In many cases, this disease is preventable. Also this disease in many cases progress very slowly and does not pose a life-threatening risk.
