- Description: Michael Koutsilieris and colleagues assayed prostate specimens from 83 patients and found 82 positive for IGF-IEc, while normal tissue showed little or no expression. Expression tracked weakly with Gleason score, running higher in locally advanced than localized cancer.

Wednesday June 12, 2013 (foodconsumer.org) -- Anything that promotes growth potentially promotes the growth of cancer. A new study in Anticancer Research suggests that insulin-like growth factor IEc also known as Mechano growth Factor may promote the development and growth of prostate cancer. Mechano growth Factor alone or in combination with other growth factors are promoted as a supplement to help muscle tissue recover from injury.

Michael Koutsilieris, MD, Ph.D, from Medical School, National & Kapodistrian University of Athens in Greece and colleagues assayed prostate cancer specimens from 83 patients for IGF-IEc expression and found normal prostate epitheliam was negative or only has mild IGF-IEc cytoplasmic expression while prostate cancer had mild to strong cytoplasmic expression.

Further the researchers found that 82 out of 83 prostate cancer samples were positive for IGF-IEc and there was a weak positive association between IGF-IEc expression levels and Gleason score, which indicates the grade of prostate cancer. That is lower expression of IGF-IEc was found in localized prostate cancer where higher expression was found with locally advanced prostate cancer. (reporting by Jimmy Downs)
