*"If people let the government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls who live under tyranny."* \- Thomas Jefferson

Dear Colleague,

In a time when U.S. Congressman Mike Pompeo's (R-KS) DARK Act, backed by the GMO food and biotech lobby, threatens to "Deny Americans the Right to Know" how our food is produced, and also take away states' rights to self determination in this regard, **every U.S. state counts** when it comes to winning the day for mandatory labeling of genetically engineered or GMO ingredients in food.

On behalf of the **[Right to Know Colorado](http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=70545129&msgid=1846142&act=PEAS&c=607027&destination=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.righttoknowcolorado.org&ref=foodconsumer.org) 2014 ballot initiative to label GMO foods,** we congratulate states including Connecticut and Vermont, where GMO labeling legislation was recently passed, as well as ongoing efforts in Oregon and elsewhere. We share a common goal to require![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/f5/c2/f5c28c07-f2c7-440d-8161-125a09d9bc91/content/images/2026/08/b37c4aa155e712b8d23e0f3495aba4384cd524a6.jpg)labeling of GMOs in foods sold in the U.S., a freedom enjoyed by citizens in 64 other countries.

And we ask you to help us in Colorado with a [contribution](http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=70545129&msgid=1846142&act=PEAS&c=607027&destination=https%3A%2F%2Frighttoknowco.nationbuilder.com%2Fdonate&ref=foodconsumer.org) and/or[volunteer](http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=70545129&msgid=1846142&act=PEAS&c=607027&destination=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.righttoknowcolorado.org%2Fvolunteer&ref=foodconsumer.org) time.

In fact, we need your help to maintain the momentum in an important region, one that can help turn the tide toward mandatory GMO labeling in the U.S., *before we literally stand to lose this fundamental right!*

**A Colorado Win Supports Vermont; Strengthens Call for Mandatory Federal Labeling**
A voter win in Colorado - a renowned center of eco-awareness and healthy lifestyles - will be another critical milestone in GMO labeling, and is needed to help support Vermont as it now faces the threat of lawsuit by the Grocery Manufacturer's Association, the lobby front for the GMO food industry, and potentially Monsanto and other pesticide companies, to repeal its mandatory GMO labeling law.

****Why We Need Your Help in Colorado**
After months of delay, the Colorado Supreme Court on March 13 overturned a challenge by the pro-biotech opposition to the GMO labeling bill, thus approving the go-ahead to collect signatures for a November ballot initiative.

As a result, we need to collect more than 100,000 signatures in a short time frame. We can get there but we need your help to fund critical petition gathering before a July deadline. To date, we have trained 300 volunteers and have gathered 15,000 signatures…but your help is needed to meet our goal in the next 60 days!

*P.S. If you've read this far, here is some additional information you may find useful:*

**Why Label GMOs?**

With no federal GMO labeling requirements in place in the U.S., it is estimated that [more than 80%](http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=70545129&msgid=1846142&act=PEAS&c=607027&destination=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nongmoproject.org%2Flearn-more%2Fgmos-and-your-family%2F&ref=foodconsumer.org) of conventional processed foods contain genetically engineered ingredients, primarily from GMO corn, soy, canola, cotton, sugar beets and other GMO crops. However, according to national GMO labeling advocacy organization Just Label It, [more than 90%](http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=70545129&msgid=1846142&act=PEAS&c=607027&destination=http%3A%2F%2Fjustlabelit.org%2Fmajority-want-more-labels-on-food%2F&ref=foodconsumer.org) of U.S. consumers surveyed want mandatory labeling of GMO foods. While pro-biotech interests claim that GMOs are safe, a growing body of[scientific research](http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=70545129&msgid=1846142&act=PEAS&c=607027&destination=http%3A%2F%2Fearthopensource.org%2Findex.php%2Freports%2F58&ref=foodconsumer.org) suggests there may be enough risks to justify the need for consumer transparency. More than [64 other countries](http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=70545129&msgid=1846142&act=PEAS&c=607027&destination=http%3A%2F%2Fjustlabelit.org%2Fright-to-know%2Flabeling-around-the-world%2F&ref=foodconsumer.org) require mandatory labeling of genetically engineered or GMO foods. Colorado joins more than [two dozen other states](http://click.icptrack.com/icp/relay.php?r=70545129&msgid=1846142&act=PEAS&c=607027&destination=http%3A%2F%2Frighttoknow-gmo.org%2Fstates&ref=foodconsumer.org) in calling for GMO labeling legislation.
