Saturday Oct 6, 2012 ([foodconsumer.org](http://www.foodconsumer.org/)) -- Eating a Mediterranean diet and vegetables regularly may help prevent blindness, cataract and glaucoma in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus, according to a study in International Journal of Opthalmology.

MM Moïse at University of Kinshasa, Department of Ophthalmology and colleagues conducted the study and found regularly eating Mediterranean diet, Brassica Rapa, beans, Abelmoschus, and Musa acuminata was associated with significantly reduced risk for blindness, cataract and glaucoma in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients.

The researchers also found physical inactivity, sun exposure and high social economic status were linked to increased risk of blindness, cataract, and glaucoma. Aging was associated with blindness and cataract and being a male was linked to higher risk for blindness and glaucoma in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The researchers concluded " Regular intake of Mediterranean diet, Brassica Rapa, beans, Abelmoschus, and Musa acuminata may significantly reduce the risk of blindness or its major causes among type 2 diabetes mellitus in Africa."
