Saturday June 1, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- Using mobile phones (cell phones) may not cause brain cancer in every user. But a new study in *Neurological Research* suggests that every mobile phone user could suffer neurodegeneration and impaired brain functions like memory and learning capability.

Long term studies have shown that using mobile phones for a long term can increase risk of brain cancer while short term studies sponsored by the industry did not yield the same conclusion.

Early studies conducted in Israel have found that exposure to mobile phone radiation can increase oxidative stress as biomarkers of oxidation like increased levels of reactive oxygen species were detected in the saliva of mobile phone users. High levels of reactive oxygen species may cause DNA damage and theoretically can increase risk of cancer development in some individuals.

The current study led by Maheep Bhatnagar and colleagues in India suggests long-term use of mobile phone can induce lipid peroxidation, lower antioxidant status, and cause neurodegeneration and impair memory and learning capability in rats.

For the study, rats age 30 days were exposed to 900 MHz radiofrequency which is used for mobile phones, for 4 hours per day for 15 days. Anxiety, spatial learning, and memory were evaluated. Brain antioxidant status and neuronal damage were also assessed.

Researchers found "A significant change in behavior, i.e., more anxiety and poor learning was shown by test animals (after exposure to mobile phone radio waves) as compared to controls and sham group."

Mobile phone radiation also significantly lowered the status of antioxidant enzymes and non-enzymatic antioxidants, and increased lipid peroxidation and the formation of reactive oxygen species in rats.

Additionally, rats that were exposed to radio waves were found to have neurodegenerative cells in hippocampal sub regions and cerebral cortex.

The researchers concluded "This extensive neuronal damage results in alterations in behavior related to memory and learning."

It's not likely that people would stop using mobile phones to avoid the risk. Any protection against the mobile phone-induced brain damage may be interesting. A study in International Journal of Radiation Biology suggests that "vitamin C may play a protective role against detrimental effects of mobile phone radiation in brain tissue."

E B Imge at Department of Biochemistry, Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in Turkey and colleagues conducted the study and found vitamin C significantly increased the activity of GSH-Px and non-significantly increased the activities of 5'-NT, ADA and CAT enzymes, which were lowered by mobile phone radio waves (David Liu, PHD)
