In a coordinated effort to speed up research, a coalition of drug makers has joined together to share data on two of the world’s most debilitating neurodegenerative diseases: Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease (Reuters).

A data bank with information on over 4,000 patients with neurodegenerative diseases will be shared among researchers in both the public and private sectors. The goal is to provide shared information that may ultimately speed up the research process as well as determine best practices for clinical trials in the future.

The project will be coordinated by the Coalition Against Major Diseases, an organization made up of various patient advocacy groups and 13 drugmakers.

Earlier this week, a study conducted by the Center for Dementia Research at the Nathan S. Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research revealed what could be ground making progress in understanding the role of a particular gene in early onset Alzheimer’s.

The gene, which under normal circumstances rids the brain cells of excess protein, mutates in early onset Alzheimer’s; this mutation disables its ability to rid cells of waste.

According to WebMd, an estimated 200,000 of the 5 million people afflicted with Alzheimer’s suffer the early onset form of the disease.

Per its website, the National Parkinson Foundation states that every year, 50,000- 60,000 new cases of PD are diagnosed each year. Young-Onset Parkinson’s is the same as typical Parkinson’s, except that it occurs in patients under 50 years of age. The average age of diagnosis for PD is 62.
