Tuesday Dec 25, 2012 (foodconsumer.org) -- A study in Annals of Agricultural and Environmental Medicine suggests that myocardial infarction (heart attack) survivors may use weight training and nutrient supplementation as an alternative to pharmacological treatment to help them recover.

A. G?siorowski A and J. Dutkiewicz from University of Maria Curie-Sk?odowska in Lublin, Poland that many things myocardial infarction survivors can do to retard disease progression in post-myocardial infarction patients.

For one thing, exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation has been found effective in reducing total and cardiovascular mortality such as death from myocardial infarction. And vitamins and other dietary supplements were reported to provide benefits as well.

The alternative approach has its advantages over the pharmacological medication, which is targeted at relieving only symptoms and often associated with an increased risk of adverse effects such as severe arrhythmia, and other many adverse outcomes.

The authors suggest that "cellular nutrition should be used in order to improve the quality of life in post-myocardial infarction patients." cellular nutrients prevent another myocardial infarction.

Specifically, the authors pointed out that nutrients that benefit general and cardiovascular health in post-myocardial infarction patients include "amino acids, vitamins, coenzyme Q10, pycnogenol, inositol, omega-3 fatty acids, macromineral elements, and trace mineral elements."

The authors concluded "appropriate weight training and diet supplementation ensure full recovery and elimination of risk factors for cardiovascular diseases."
