- Description: In 117 people with type 2 diabetes, 12 weeks of eating 50 to 100 grams of nuts a day raised serum oleic acid and monounsaturated fat, and those increases were inversely associated with coronary heart disease risk factors and estimated 10-year risk.

Saturday June 14, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- Nut consumption has been linked to reduced risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus and coronary heart disease. A study confirms that it is the fat in nuts that helps the risk reduction.

The study shows nut consumption in a dose of 50 to 100 grams per day increased serum oleic acid and monounsaturated fatty acids, which have been associated with reduced risk of coronary heart disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and.

For the study, 117 men and women with type 2 diabetes mellitus consumed one of three iso-energetic (mean 475 kcal/d) supplements for 12 weeks, all nuts (50-100 g/d); half nuts and half muffins, and all muffins as controls.

Fatty acid levels in the phospholipid, triacylglycerol, free fatty acids, and cholesteryl ester fractions from fasting blood samples were measured at baseline and at week 12.

An inverse association was found between changes in coronary heart disease risk and changes in oleic acid and monounsaturated fatty acids in the triacylglycerol and phospholipids fractions.

In the cholesteryl ester fraction, change in monounsaturated fatty acids was inversely correlated with markers of glycemic control.

The study concluded "Nut consumption increased (oleic acid) OA and (monounsaturated fatty acids) MUFA content of the serum phospholipid fraction, which was inversely associated with CHD (coronary heart disease) risk factors and 10-year CHD (coronary heart disease) risk."
