- Description: Researchers followed 1,607 Italian women diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003-2005 through 2008. Among those with ER+PR+ tumors, a higher BMI carried a 190% greater risk of dying of the disease and fasting glucose above 94 mg/dL a 160% greater risk.

Friday Sept 13, 2013 (foodconsumer.org) -- A study published recently in European Journal of Cancer suggests that being obese or diabetic can increase the risk of breast cancer death.

The study led by P Minicozzi of Department of Preventive and Predictive Medicine, Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori in Milano, Italy shows high fasting blood glucose and obesity significantly and independently increase the risk of death from hormone receptor-positive breast cancer.

The study was intended to examine the effect of fasting blood glucose, which tends to be high in patients with diabetes, and body mass index at the diagnosis of breast on the risk of death from the disease.

For the study, 1,607 Italian women whose information on BMI or blood glucose or diabetes, were checked out from five Italian cancer registries in 2003 to 2005 and followed up to the end of the year 2008\.

The study found women with ER+PR+ breast cancer who had higher BMI were 190% more likely to die from the disease cases, than those with BMI of 23.5 to 27.3 kg/m2\.

A 160% higher breast cancer mortality rate was also found among those who had high blood glucose (greater than 94 mg/dL) than those who had a lower serum glucose level.

The researchers concluded "Our results provide evidence that in ER+PR+ patients, high blood glucose and high BMI are independently associated with increased risk of breast cancer death." (JD)
