Saturday May 10, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new study published in JAMA shows that the prevalence of obesity in American youth and adults in 2011 to 2012 remained as high as that observed in 2003.

In 2003 to 2004, more than one-third of U.S. adults and 17% of youth in the U.S. suffer obesity, according to the study report.

The data on weight and height used in the study to determine an participant's obesity status came from 9,120 participants in the 2011-2012 nationally representative National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

The study finds in 2011 to 2012, 8.1% of infants and toddlers had too much weight and 16.9% of 2 to 19 year-olds and 34.9% of adults lived with obesity.

A significant decrease in the rate of obesity was found among 2 to 5 year-olds, 13.9% in 2003 to 2004 vs. 9.4% in 2011-2012, but an increase in the obesity rate was found among women aged 60 years and older, 31.5% in 2003-2004 vs. 38.1% in 2011-2012.

The study concluded "Overall, there have been no significant changes in obesity prevalence in youth or adults between 2003-2004 and 2011-2012\. Obesity prevalence remains high and thus it is important to continue surveillance." (David Liu)
