Saturday Oct 12, 2013 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new report scheduled to be published in Cancer Treatment and Research in 2014 suggests that eating olive oil can reduce the risk and eating omega 6 fat can increase the risk of breast cancer.

Eduard Escrich from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in Bellaterra, Barcelona, Spain and colleagues conducted the study and disclosed a finding that may give women some idea what cooking oils they may best use to lower their risk of breast cancer.

Early studies have shown a link between dietary fat and risk of breast cancer. Extra-virgin olive oil in Mediterranean diet has been associated with low incidence and mortality rates from breast cancer and other chronic disease.

In previous studies, researchers have demonstrated the differential modulatory effect of dietary fats on mammary carcinogenesis. And they found diets high in n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids found high in corn oil and soy bean oil stimulate the development of breast cancer while extra-virgin olive oil has a negative effect on breast cancer development.
