- Description: An Oregon Health & Science University study found monkeys fed a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids developed neural networks resembling those of healthy humans, while monkeys on a deficient diet had far more limited networking. DHA comes from fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and tuna.

Monkeys eating a diet full of omega-3 fatty acids developed brains that had neural networks similar to those found in healthy humans, according to an Oregon Health & Science University study, while monkeys eating a diet deficient in the fatty acids developed brains with much more limited brain networking. Omega-3 fatty acids like docosahexaenoic acid, or DHA used in the study are considered essential fatty acids for humans. They are essential because humans cannot make them and they need to get them through a diet with omega 3 fatty acids. DHA is found in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel and tuna. The study published in the Journal of Neuroscience suggests that omega-3 fatty acids are important for healthy brain development.
