Wednesday June 12, 2013 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new study in Tumori. has found evidence to suggest that premenopausal women who are overweight or obese are more likely than those who have a normal body weight develop estrogen receptor negative (ER-) breast cancer.

The study led by I. Petekkaya and colleagues involved 1847 female breast cancer patients with 1390 considered in the analyses to examine the association between body mass index and the risk for different types of breast cancers.

The researchers found body mass index at diagnosis was not associated with the type of breast cancer among postmenopausal and premenopausal women.

However, they did find "Premenopausal women with a BMI of ≥25.0 kg/m2 showed a tendency towards ER- tumors when compared to premenopausal women with a BMI of <25.0 kg/m2 (P = 0.009)."

Logically, increased body mass index or overweight and obesity indicates that an individual has excessive intake of calories and their systems do whatever it take to store the energy, which can potentially also promote the development and growth of breast cancer and other malignancies.
