- Description: A review found plant-based foods, lean meat and oily fish consistently associated with favorable bone markers such as bone mineral density, and some studies linked them to fewer fractures. # **Plant-based food, lean meat good for bone health**

Monday June 22, 2015 (foodconsumer.org) -- You are what you eat. Foods affect every function in the human body. A new review suggests that high intakes of plant-based foods, lean protein or oily fish may protect against bone diseases.

The review found plant-based foods, lean meat and oily fish had been consistently associated with favorable surrogate markers of bone health such as bone mineral density (BMD). Some studies linked intakes of these foods to lower risk of fractures.

But Fung and Feskanich did not find evidence to suggest that eating neither a prudent diet nor a western diet affect the risk of fractures in men and women aged over 50.

Plant-based foods provide lots of minerals which are good for bone health. Some studies show that eating plant-based diet is linked to lower risk of fracture while drinking milk was linked to higher risk of bone diseases like osteoporosis.
