- Description: In a Carcinogenesis study, National Cancer Institute researchers gave a plant phospholipid/lipid conjugate to mice carrying an aggressive Lewis lung cancer model and saw growth fall 30 percent, with less angiogenesis and more apoptosis. They propose it as a possible chemopreventive supplement.

Tuesday May 27, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- Taking a plant phospholipid/lipid conjugate as a dietary supplement may help prevent lung cancer, according to a study published in Carcinogenesis.

Lung cancer has poor prognosis due to the difficult in diagnosing the disease in its early stage. Because of this, chemoprevention is important.

The study shows the dietary supplement suppressed in-vivo growth of a lung cancer model by 30%, indicating the dietary supplement may be used to prevent lung cancer.

The study was conducted by William G. Stetler-Stevenson at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, USA and colleagues.

For the study, the researchers used a fast growing highly aggressive murine Lewis lung cancer model to examine the anticancer effect of a plant phospholipid/lipid conjugate.

The dietary supplement contains known antioxidants, ferulic acid, and lipoic acid, and soy sterols and an insoluble matrix.

The experiment shows that lung cancer angiogenesis was significantly decreased and apoptosis was increased in rodents subject to the supplementation with the plant phospholipid/lipid conjugate.

The researchers concluded "These findings lead us to propose using this plant phospholipid/lipid conjugate as a dietary supplement that may be useful in (lung) cancer prevention." (David Liu, PHD)
