Thursday Aug 7, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- Scientists have recently published a study in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggesting that eating processed red meat may increase risk of high blood pressure or hypertension.

The study did not find any association between unprocessed red meat consumption and the risk of high blood pressure.

The study was based on data from a cohort of 44,616 disease-free French women who were followed from 1993 through 2008 during which 10,256 incident cases of hypertension were recorded.

The study found that women who ate 5 or more servings (50 grams per serving) of processed red meat per week were 17% more likely to develop hypertension, compared with those consuming less than one serving per month.

The associations were adjusted for potential risk factors including age, education, smoking status, physical activity, body mass index, menopause, menopausal hormone therapy, alcohol drinking, body mass index, consumption of bread and coffee, and fruit and vegetables.

The study concluded "In this large prospective cohort of French women, we observed an association between the consumption of processed red meat and hypertension. We observed no association for unprocessed red meat consumption and hypertension. (David Liu, PHD)
