- Description: Among 926 physicians with non-metastatic prostate cancer, taking 5% more of daily calories as saturated fat in place of carbohydrate went with 80% higher all-cause and 180% higher prostate cancer mortality. The authors say vegetable fat may lower the risk of death. Cancer Causes & Control.

Friday Nov 27, 2015 (foodconsumer.org) -- Oncologists might tell their prostate cancer patients that they can eat whatever they would like to eat. But a new [study ](http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10552-015-0606-4?ref=foodconsumer.org)suggests that what a patient eats may influence his odds of survival.

The study published in Cancer Causes & Control this year showed that prostate cancer patients who ate 5% more of daily calories from saturated fat and 5% less of calories from carbohydrates were 80% and 180% more likely to die from all causes and prostate cancer, respectively.

The study also found prostate cancer patients who ate 10% more of calories from saturated fat and 10% less of calories from carbohydrates were 33% less likely to die from all causes.

The study was based on data from 926 male physicians diagnosed with non-metastatic prostate cancer in the Physicians' Health Study.

Researchers concluded "Among men with non-metastatic prostate cancer, saturated fat intake may increase risk of death and vegetable fat intake may lower risk of death."

It should be noted that not all vegetable oils are the same. Studies have suggested that omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids in vegetable oils like corn oil and soy oil may not be good for prostate cancer patients while [olive oil](https://www.foodconsumer.org/got%5Fprostate%5Fcancer%5F1125150727/) which is full of monounsaturated fatty acids is a healthy oil patients may use. Another study shows that high fat diet promotes the production of proinflammatory cytokines. which are involved in the development and progression of prostate cancer.
