A survey released recently in Journal of Clinical Oncology says that prostate cancer treatments can cause sexual dysfunction in an overwhelming majority of cases. Prostate cancer treatments include radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery all of which can affect patients' sexual function.

Prostate cancer is diagnosed in more than 220,000 men in the United States each year. The disease progresses very slow in many cases and still patients ask for treatments that do more harm than good in men at certain ages.

The survey of 379 spouses of prostate cancer survivors conducted by the Michigan Public Health Institute reports that 75% of spouses reported that treatment led to a decline in the quality of sexual life. Of survivors, 55% considered their sexual life as good or excellent while 35% reported poor or fair performance.

Although sexual dysfunction was so commonly seen in prostate cancer patients who received treatment, only 7% of survivors sought medical attention and only 4% of oncologists referred the survivors to a sex therapist.

Adverse effects like sexual dysfunction resulting from prostate cancer treatments are expected. And no effective treatments are available to affectively treat sexual dysfunction in survivors who have been treated for prostate cancer. (david Liu)
