September is both National Prostate Cancer Awareness and National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

According to the [National Library of Medicine (NLM)](http://www.nlm.nih.gov/?ref=foodconsumer.org), cancer begins in your cells. Normally, your body replaces old cells that die. Sometimes this process goes wrong. New cells grow even when you do not need them, and old cells do not die when they should. These extra cells can form a mass called a tumor, though not all tumors are cancerous.

The spread of cancer from one part of the body to another is called metastasis. Symptoms and treatment depend on the [cancer type](http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/cancers.html?ref=foodconsumer.org) and how advanced it is. Treatment plans may include surgery, [radiation](http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/radiationtherapy.html?ref=foodconsumer.org) and/or [chemotherapy](http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/cancerchemotherapy.html?ref=foodconsumer.org).
