- Description: Japanese researchers reported in Life Science that raspberry ketone kept mice on a high-fat diet from gaining liver and visceral fat, and reduced that fat when given after weight gain. They studied it because its structure resembles capsaicin and synephrine.

Sunday Dec 14, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- Some studies conducted in Japan and Korea suggest that taking raspberry ketone supplements alone or supplements with this fruit flavor compound, which is found in raspberries, blackberries and red berries, may help prevent or treat obesity.

C. Morimoto and colleagues from Ehime University School of Medicine in Ehime, Japan reported in the May 2005 issue of *Life Science* that their study demonstrated raspberry ketone (chemically called 4-(4-hydroxyphenyl) butan-2-one) has anti-obese activities.

Morimoto et al. conducted the study because they know that the chemical structure of this compound is similar to the structures of capsaicin and synephrine, which are known to exert an anti-obese activity and change the lipid metabolism pathway.

In their study, all mice were fed a high fat diet, which is known to promote the development of obesity. One group of mice was supplemented with raspberry ketone from the first day of the feeding study in a dose of 0.5,1 or 10% for 10 weeks. This was to examine if this compound can prevent obesity. Another group was supplemented with this compound in a dose of 1%, starting from the 7th week for 5 weeks. This was to see if raspberry ketone can help treat obesity.

They found raspberry ketone prevented mice on a high fat diet from gaining weight in the liver and visceral adipose tissues and as a treatment reduced the weight of the liver and visceral adipose tissues and hepatic triacylglycerol concentrations in weight gained mice due to the use of the high fat diet without raspberry supplemented.

Specifically, they found "RK (raspberry ketone) significantly increased norepinephrine-induced lipolysis associated with the translocation of hormone-sensitive lipase from the cytosol to lipid droplets in rat epididymal fat cells."

They concluded that raspberry ketone prevents and improves obesity and fatty liver.

In the Nov, 2014 of Pharmaceutical Biology, K.S. Park in Cheongju University in Chungbuk , Korea confirmed that raspberry ketone suppresses the major genes involved in the adiogenesis pathway and prevents adipocyte differentiation and fat accumulation in a dose-dependent manner.

Park also found raspberry ketone is also able to reduce mRNA concentrations of lipogenic genes and increase the transcriptional activities of genes involved in lipolysis and the lipid oxidation pathways.

Park earlier as a researcher of Korea Food & Drug Administration in Seoul, Korea reported in the Oct, 2012 issue of Planta Med. that "raspberry ketone increases both lipolysis and fatty acid oxidation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes."

L. Wang and colleagues from College of Food, Shenyang Agricultural University in Shenyang, Liaoning, China reported in the May 2012 issue of Journal of Medicinal Food that raspberry ketone protects against nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in rats fed a high fat diet.

Their study suggested that [raspberry ketone](http://pillsco.miiduu.com/3x-500-mg-super-pure-raspberry-ketone-ultra-weight-loss-diet-pills-high-grade?ref=foodconsumer.org) has a dual effect, liver protection and fat reduction.

While raspberry ketone is promising as a weight loss pill to help prevent or treat obesity, much research remains to be conducted to further understand its efficacy in humans. Raspberry ketone is not only used as a flavoring agent in the flavor industry, but has already been manufactured and sold as a dietary supplement over the Internet and local health stores.
