- Description: A 2005 Life Sciences study fed mice a high-fat diet with 0.5% to 2% raspberry ketone for 10 weeks and found it prevented gains in body, liver and visceral fat weight. In mice already fattened, adding it for five weeks lowered those weights. The authors credit norepinephrine-induced lipolysis.

Saturday Sept 21, 2013 (foodconsumer.org) -- A study reported in 2005 in Life Sciences suggests that taking raspberry ketone also known as Rheosmin as a dietary supplement can help prevent obesity in people eating a high fat diet.

Chie Morimotoa of Ehime University School of Medicine in Japan and colleagues conducted the animal trial and found supplementation of raspberry ketone can prevent obesity in mice on a high fat diet.

For the trial, one group of mice were fed a high fat diet supplemented with either 0.5%, 1% or 2% raspberry ketone for 10 weeks to see how this supplement affects weight gain in mice that were not obese in the first place. Another group were fed the same high fat diet for 6 weeks to fatten the mice and then fed the same diet supplemented with 1% raspberry ketone for another 5 weeks to see how this weight loss aid can help prevent obesity in mice that had gained some weight in the first place.

The researchers found raspberry ketone prevented an increase in the weight of the body, the liver and visceral adipose tissues.

Among mice that had gained weight due to using a high fat diet without raspberry ketone supplemented, using raspberry ketone was found to decrease the weights of the body, the liver and visceral tissues and hepatic triacylglycerol content although they kept using the same high fat diet.

It was found that raspberry ketone prevented obesity by promoting norepinephrine-induced lypolysis.

The researcher concluded raspberry ketone "prevents and improves obesity and fatty liver. These effects appear to stem from the action of RK (raspberry ketone" in altering the lipid metabolism, or more specifically, in increasing norepinephrine-induced lipolysis in white adipocytes."

Another study released in 2012 in Journal of Medicinal Food shows that raspberry ketone can help prevent non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, a liver disease associated with a high fat diet.

Lili Wang of College of Food, Shenyang Agricultural University in Shenyang, Liaoning, China and colleagues conducted the study and also found raspberry ketone "had a dual effect of liver protection and fat reduction, and the mechanism was probably mediated by alleviation of fatty degeneration of liver cells, decreased liver inflammation, correction of dyslipidemia, reversal of LEP and INS resistance, and improved antioxidant capacity," in addition to promoting lipolysis as found by the Japanese scientists.

Raspberry ketone (4-(4-hydroxyphenyl) butan-2-one) is found in red raspberry (Rubus idaeus). Its structure is similar to the structures of capsaicin and synephrine, which have been already known to have an anti-obesity activity and be able to alter the lipid metabolism.

**Here is some update added on Nov 17, 2013 (There is some duplication)**

Here is another study (part 1) led by Japanese scientists that shows supplementation with raspberry ketone prevents weight gain or results in weight loss. Raspberry ketone (4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-butan-2-one) is one key flavor compound for raspberry flavor.

The study published in Japanese Journal of Constitutional Medicine shows raspberry ketone reduced body weight, visceral adipose tissues and liver weights. Additionally, it also finds that raspberry ketone improved fatty liver.

For the study, mice were fed on a high diet with 0.5, 1 or 2% of raspberry ketone for 10 weeks. This was to demonstrate that raspberry ketone can prevent weight gain or obesity. Another group of mice were fed a high fat diet for six weeks first to fatten them and then put them on a diet supplemented with 1% raspberry ketone. This was to demonstrate that raspberry ketone can result in weight loss.

Another study (part 2) led by the same team of researchers examined how raspberry ketone prevents obesity or results in weight loss.

The researchers found raspberry ketone inhibited pancreatic lipase activity in rats, which is needed to use fat and inhibit fat absorption.

They also found "Raspberry ketone significantly increased norepinephrine-induced lipolysis associated with translocation of hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) from the cytosol to the lipid droplets in rat fat cells."

The study concluded "raspberry ketone may have the anti-obesity action through the inhibition of small intestinal absorption of dietary fat by inhibiting pancreatic lipase activity and the increase of norepinephrine-induced lipolysis in fat cells."

Those who want to try raspberry ketone to lose some weight or prevent obesity need to know the dosage they need to use to have an effect. In the animal study, the researchers used 0.5 to 2% raspberry ketone. That means, if you eat one pound of meal, you need 2 to 9 grams of raspberry ketone. (David Liu, PHD)
