- Description: A study in Tumor Biology found a methanolic Salvia triloba extract triggered cell death and blocked blood-vessel growth in two prostate cancer cell lines, PC-3 and DU-145, while sparing normal cells. The extract also sharply reduced cell motility in both lines.

Many herbal therapies or alternative treatments are now available for those who want to try natural remedies to treat prostate cancer. A new study published this year in Tumor Biology suggests that Salvia triloba extract can be another effective herbal therapy for prostate cancer.

The study tested a methanolic Salvia triloba extract to see how this extract affects prostate cancer cell lines, PC-3 and DU-145, in comparison with normal HUVEC cells. DU-145 is moderately aggressive while PC-3 is highly aggressive malignant tumor.

The study found the Salvia triloba extract induces cytotoxicity, apoptosis and an anti-angiogenic effect against both PC-3 and DU-145 while it does not seem to have any harmful effect on normal cells.

In both prostate cancer cell lines, the Salvia triloba extract reduced significantly the cell motility, meaning that it can also slow the progression or metastasis of prostate cancer. (David Liu)
