Tuesday May 21, 2013 (foodconsumer.org) -- If you are at higher risk for breast cancer, watch your intake of dietary fat. High intake of trans fat, saturated fat and even monounsaturated fat can increase the risk of dying from breast cancer and all cases, according to a review in Nutrition.

Nour Makarem from Food Studies and Public Health, New York University in New York, NY and colleagues reviewed 18 studies to examine the effect of total dietary fay and fat subtypes used pre- and or post diagnosis of breast cancer on the survival odds in breast cancer survivors.

Overall, most studies suggested that higher prediagnostic intake of saturated fat was associated with increased risk for breast cancer specific and all cause mortality. Postdiganostic intake of trans fat was correlated with a 45% and 78% increased risk for breast cancer specific mortality and all cause potability among breast cancer patients, respectively.

Higher intake of monounsaturated fat both pre- and postdiagnosis was associated with increased risk for all-cause and breast cancer specific mortality, according to the review.

Two studies suggested that higher intake of omega-3 fat may help survival among breast cancer patients although saturated fat was surely associated with increased risk of dying from breast cancer and all causes.
