Friday April 11, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- Eating a diet full of saturated fat may increase the risk of several types of breast cancer, according to a study published April 9 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

The study of 337,000 women age 20 to 70 in 10 European countries who were followed for an average of 12 years found women who ate a diet high in saturated fat were 27% more likely than those eating a low fat diet to develop several types of breast cancer, which are fueled by high sex hormone (estrogen).

Saturated fat is mostly found in animal products like meats and dairy products. Saturated fat has been found early to increase the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus and heart disease.

The association between saturated fat intake and increased risk of breast cancer has been found for many years now. Previous studies have already found that high consumption of saturated fat is linked to increased serum levels of estrogen.

Dietary fiber and actually anything that may reduce the production of female sex hormone (estrogen) may lower the risk of breast cancer. Physical activity can also lower the serum level of estrogen. (David Liu)
