- Description: In diabetic male rats, a diet enriched with 5 or 10 percent sesame oil improved testicular microstructure and raised testosterone dose-dependently, but did not lower blood sugar or protect epididymal sperm, a World Journal of Men's Health study reports.

Monday June 16, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- A study in World Journal of Men's Health shows that eating a diet enriched with sesame oil may improve the reproductive parameters in males with diabetes mellitus.

The study of sesame oil in diabetic male Wistar rats shows that although sesame oil did not reduce plasma blood sugar in diabetic rats, the supplement did improve spermatocytes, Leydig cells/tubule, and the germ cell to Sertoli cell ratio, which would be otherwise lower in rats with diabetes mellitus.

In the study, rats with diabetes mellitus induced with Streptozocin received either 5% or 10% sesame oil enriched diet or normal diet. Normal rats received normal diet or 5% sesame oil enriched diet for 56 days.

In diabetic rats, total spermatogonia, sperm progressive motility and viability were lower and sesame oil supplementation did not improve them.

However, sesame oil did improve the serum testosterone concentration in rats with diabetes mellitus in a dose-dependent manner.

The study concluded "sesame oil supplementation improved the reproductive parameters of diabetic rats at the levels of the testicular microstructure and function, but was not effective in protecting the epididymal sperm." (David LiU, PHD)
