Wednesday June 18, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- An analysis of data from the Healthy Eating Asians Remain Together study suggests that high sodium intake and low magnesium intake may increase risk of hypertension or high blood pressure, which is recognized as a heart disease risk.

For the study, urine samples collected during a 24-hour period from 168 participants in India were analyzed for biomarkers and cardiometabolic risks.

The study reveals that participants who were considered hypertensive had higher blood pressure; higher body weight and body mass index and the sodium and magnesium to creatinine ratios in patients aged 40 and older were significantly different.

The study concluded "High sodium intake and reduction in magnesium consumption are associated with increased blood pressure in patients from India."

Sodium is commonly added to cooked foods. Processed foods often contain high levels of salts.

Magnesium is found high in foods including dark leafy greens like raw spinach, Swiss chard and kale, nuts and seeds like sesame seeds, Brazil nuts, Almonds and Cashews, beans, and whole grains. Magnesium is found in high in plant-based foods suggesting that people need to eat more plant-based foods to maintain healthy blood pressure. (David Liu, PHD)
