- Description: Twenty well-trained young men took spinach supplements or placebo daily for 14 days before running a half-marathon. Those on spinach held markers of oxidative stress and muscle damage lower afterward and raised total antioxidant capacity, the small study reports.

Saturday June 14, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- Spinach supplements may help athletes or those who are physically active because spinach contains high amounts of antioxidants and help relieve oxidative stress, according to a new study in Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness.

The study shows that half-marathonin well-trained healthy young men who took spinach supplements maintained lower levels of protein carbonyl (PC), malondialdehyde (MDA), uric acid, and creatinekinase (CK) while those who did not take the supplement had their levels of serum MDA, PC, and CK increased.

For the study, twenty well-trained men were assigned to take either spinach or placebo daily for 14 days before running. The dose of spinach supplements was 1 gram per kg body weight.

All participants were monitored after running 21 km for biomarkers including TAC, marker of the plasma antioxidant capacity, CK indicating muscle damage, and MDA, PC, and uric acid, markers of oxidative stress.

Spinach supplementation led to a significant increase in TAC and maintained PC, MDA, uric acid and CK at lower levels after exercise, compared with controls.

The study concluded "chronic daily oral supplementation of spinach has alleviating effects on known markers of oxidative stress and muscle damage following a half-marathon in well trained healthy young men."
