- Description: Mice given Averrhoa carambola (star fruit) extract at 25 mg/kg for five days before exposure to a liver carcinogen developed fewer tumours and less tumour burden, and showed stronger antioxidant enzyme activity, a study in Advances in Pharmacological Sciences reports.

Tuesday may 27, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- A new study in Advances in Pharmacological Sciences suggests taking averrhoa carambola (Star Fruit) extract (ACE) as a dietary supplement may help prevent hepatocellular carcinoma – the most common type of liver cancer.

For the study, mice were fed or not fed ACE in a dose of 25 mg/kg body weight for five days in a row and then all mice were exposed to diethylnitrosamine to induce liver cancer and CH4 to promote the growth of liver cancer.

ACE supplementation was found to significantly reduce the tumor incidence, the number of tumors and tumor burden.

The ACE supplement was also found to boost the activities of enzymatic antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase and catalase and nonenzymatic antioxidant, that is, reduced glutathione and total proteins.

Additionally, ACE prevented the carcinogen and cancer promoter- induced adverse physical and biochemical alterations in mice.

The researchers concluded "This study suggests the prophylactic role of Averrhoa carambola against hepatocellular carcinoma in mice."

Liver cancer is one of the most deadly malignancies and hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common form of liver cancer. (david Liu, PHD)
