A study of 5,692 patients with HIV showed that incidence of diabetes mellitus was 14% higher in HIV patients who took statins for a year, compared to those who did not take. Taking statins for more years, the patients were at higher risk. Studies have shown statin therapy is effective in lowering cholesterol and preventing cardiovascular disease (CVD) but modestly increases risk for incident diabetes mellitus. The researchers suggest that HIV patients should not fear taking statins if their doctors believe they could benefit from taking statins to lower their heart risk.

Many natural remedies can be used to prevent and treat diabetes mellitus effectively. For instance, curcumin taken in a dose of 6 grams per day can effectively prevent the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus in men and women with prediabetes.
