- Description: In a US government animal study, rats exposed to GSM or CDMA cell phone radiation from before birth developed glioma in up to 3.3% of exposed males and heart schwannomas in up to 6.6%, while no control rats developed either. Female rats appeared less susceptible.

Friday May 27, 2016 (foodconsumer.org) -- [Part of the study](http://biorxiv.org/content/biorxiv/early/2016/05/26/055699.full.pdf?ref=foodconsumer.org) in which the U.S. invested 25 million dollars has yielded some evidence to confirm findings from some other long-term studies that long-term exposure to cell phone radiation can increase the risk of glioma - a type of brain cancer. The current animal study also found the cell phone radiation can also cause tumors in the heart.

For the study, Hsd:Sprague Dawley® SD® (HSD) rats were exposed to GSM-2 and CDMA-modulated cell phone radiofrequency radiation (RFR) used in U.S. wireless networks at a dose of either 0, 1.5, 3, or 6 W/kg, starting in utero and continuing throughout their lifetimes (up to 106 weeks).

At the end of the study, glioma was found in up to 3.3% of male rats exposed to all levels (1.5, 3, and 6 w/kg) of GSM cell phone radiation and 3.3% of male rats exposed to CDMA cell phone radiation at 6 W/kg only. In comparison, 1.1% of female rats exposed to GSM cell phone radiation at 6W/kg and 2.2% of female rats exposed to CDMA at 1.5 W/kg developed brain lesions. Somehow, female rats were less susceptible to the damage induced by either type of cell phone radiation. No control rats developed brain cancer.

Surprisingly, cell phone radiation seems to have a greater detrimental effect on the heart. Schwannoma, a type of nerve tumor, was found in the heart of up to 6.6% male rats exposed to either GSM cell phone radiation or CDMA cell phone radiation at all doses. The tumor was less frequently found in female rats exposed to either type of radiation. The tumor was only found in 2.2% of the female rats exposed to 3 W/kg of GSM cell phone radiation and 2.2% of the female rats exposed to 1.5 W/kg and 6 W/kg of CDMA cell phone radiation. No control rats developed this type of tumor.

Based on previous studies, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an organization under UN World Health Organization has already considered cell phone radiation as a probable human carcinogen.

Some news outlets say that non-ionizing radiation like cell phone radiation does not affect DNA, in a sense, suggesting that the radiation cannot induce cancer and downplaying any link between exposure to cell phone radiation and brain cancer. The truth is, studies have proved that [Cell phone radiation induces DNA breakage](http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1383571805000896?ref=foodconsumer.org) and mutation, which can eventually lead to carcinogenesis possibly by generating [reactive oxygen species](https://www.foodconsumer.org/mobile%5Fphone%5Fradiation%5Fharms%5Fyour%5Fbrain%5F0601140846/) (ROS) and draining the antioxidant reservoir. That explains why rats exposed to cell phone radiation were at higher risk for brain tumor. That is also why IARC classifies cell phone radiation as a probable human carcinogen.
