Tuesday Aug 26, 2014 (foodconsumer.org) -- A [review](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24696997?ref=foodconsumer.org) offers the following information regarding complementary and alternative medicine treatments for multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis known as disseminated sclerosis or encephalomyelitis disseminata, is an inflammatory disease that has something to do with the damaged insulating covers of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Multiple sclerosis often occurs during early adulthood.

Conventional treatment options for Multiple sclerosis are limited and surveys suggest that up to 70% of patients with MS have used one or more complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments, which include diet, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidant supplements.

The most promising CAM treatments include low fat diet, omega-3 fatty acids, lipoic acid, and vitamin D supplements which have potential anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects against relapsing and progressive forms of multiple sclerosis. (David Liu, PHD)
