Domestic violence is a type of abuse. It involves injuring someone, usually a spouse or partner, but it can also be a parent, child, the elderly or other family member.

Domestic violence is a serious problem. According to the [National Library of Medicine](http://www.nlm.nih.gov/?ref=foodconsumer.org), it is the most common cause of injury to women ages 15 to 44\. Victims may suffer physical injuries such as bruises or broken bones. They may suffer emotionally from[depression](http://answers.usa.gov/cgi-bin/gsa%5Fict.cfg/php/enduser/std%5Fadp.php?p%5Ffaqid=8503&p%5Fsid=yyoFVfTj&p%5Flva=7956&ref=foodconsumer.org), [anxiety](http://answers.usa.gov/cgi-bin/gsa%5Fict.cfg/php/enduser/std%5Fadp.php?p%5Ffaqid=8461&p%5Fsid=yyoFVfTj&p%5Flva=7956&ref=foodconsumer.org) or social isolation.

It's hard to know exactly how common domestic violence is because people often do not report it. There is no typical victim: it happens among people of all ages, and it affects those of all levels of income and education.
